A weekend home cut into a coffee-estate slope. Rammed-earth walls and deep verandahs keep the interior cool without mechanical cooling for most of the year.
We set the house along the contour rather than against it, so each room opens to a different reach of the valley. Earth dug for the foundations went straight back into the walls, and the roof was pitched to feed a single rainwater tank that carries the house through the dry months.
